With a goal of avoiding new purchases, we needed a way to use the eclectic mix of zombies, witches, and other ghouls in a way that made sense. Enter Halloweenland, a life-sized board game that allowed us to group the decorations into various thematic scenes that players would move through encountering spooks and treat stations along the trail. The “dots” were applied using skeleton stamps with contrasting white ink. The bocconcini look delightfully spooky in red depression glass. Place the the farmers cheese and Wensleydale opposite the mozzarella. Add small bowls to hold the pickled peppers, tomatoes, and beets to prevent the juices from making the other items on the board soggy. Next, cut the top off the pomegranate and score down the side to pop open the fruit. Lay out the pomegranate and grapes around the cheeses. Fill in any open spaces on the board with crackers. For a finishing touch of red and burst of flavor, spoon the jam over top of the brie/farmers cheese. Ours is slightly smaller because we lobbed the upper corners off to make a headstone shape. The plywood is attached to a frame made with the 2”x4” boards. The 3 inch wood screws hold the frame together and the 1.5 inch screws attach the plywood to the frame. The hole is 6 inches in diameter and positioned centered on the board 9 inches from the top. Chris used a jigsaw to cut the curved top of the tombstone and the hole. The feet are attached with the carriage bolts, nuts and washers to allow the games to lay flat for storage. See the video at the bottom of the page for a peek at the back of the boards. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f4d221906cbb16f714317a9/cecb7519-7d9c-4ad8-9021-4f480d58d31f/SMI_0999.jpg Blog - Halloween Cornhole - Beanbag details Regulation sized cornhole bean bags are 6 inches x 6 inches, so we started by cutting 16 fabric squares in 6.5 inches by 6.5 inches in order to make a total of 8 bags. Once we had fabric squares, we beveled the upper corners on all of them. From there, half received a jagged edge at the bottom to create ghost shapes. The other half received a cut at the bottom to make a skull jawline. We painted faces on them with a black fabric paint before starting the sewing process. We stitched them together 1/4 inch in from the edge with the painted side facing in, flipped them inside out, and then filled each one with around 14 ounces of beans. Once the opening was stitched up, we were ready to play. We do recommend a medium weight fabric and/or double stitching the seam as the game play can be rough on the beanbags. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f4d221906cbb16f714317a9/e3ceb317-3cda-49a2-a643-49d24610dc0b/SMI_1010.jpg Blog - Halloween Cornhole - Painting details Part of the reason we love Halloween is that it’s a wonderful time to embrace imperfections-the old, dingy, warped, and distorted fit right in this time of year. Think: haunted houses with slanted floors, cracked tombstones, and cobweb covered furniture. Heather freehanded all of the decorations on the set instead of using stencils. Each one was painted with a mix of leftover project paints. On both, she started with a base coat for the background color. Once dry, the board was dry brushed with a contrasting color to add some texture. Next, each one was outlined with a black line made to look like engraving and to accentuate the shape. From there, details were added- RIP text, scrollwork shapes, cracks, grass, and spiderwebs. Lastly, some green and brown paint was sponged on to simulate moss. Welcome to Sassafras Farmhaunts, the Halloween love child of Chris & Heather Smith. We’ve been hosting Halloween bashes since 2006, and we’re dying to share some of our spooky, macabre, and whimsical ideas with you. How it all started: As kids, Heather and her brother would set up a haunted forest behind their house spending all fall hanging up ghosts and stuffing scarecrows to decorate the path. Relatives would be led by flashlight down the trail with a dollar store spooky sounds cassette setting the mood. Chris’ Halloween experience was more official. His uncle built one of Nashville’s first haunted houses where Chris helped as an actor. Naturally, when Chris & Heather married in 2006, they combined forces to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. As time marched on: In 2015, the Smiths bought a farmhouse that was built in 1921 and nicknamed it Sassafras Farmhouse. Not only did it allow the annual Halloween celebration to grow, but with each passing year, the house becomes slightly spookier year-round. Bat lithographs adorn the hallway walls and potions brew with harvests from the herb garden. Chris & Heather started to embrace the dark side of Sassafras Farmhouse.
